The Nova Scotia government has announced additional funding for a new dialysis unit to be located at the Digby General Hospital.
The $7.4 million announced today is for the detailed design and construction of a six-station dialysis unit.
Clare-Digby MLA Gordon Wilson says the province previously committed $600,000 for an initial assessment on where the unit could be located in the hospital.
"That work has been completed and submitted in for approval for the next step which is the most exciting part, where we're actually going to get into the construction phase."
Wilson says the engineering plans will be put together immediately then it will go to tender.
He says this is very exciting news.
"I think it's a huge vote of confidence, not only for our area but certainly for our hospital. That this is an integral facility that we have in the Digby area
to serve a lot of different areas of primary healthcare,"
Construction of the unit is expected to begin late this year and be completed in 2020.
