Ideas Go From Crazy To Awesome Tonight

Outside the box thinking will be rewarded tonight.

A thousand dollars will be given to the craziest idea by the Awesome Foundation of the South Shore.

The four finalists are a twitter powered bubble machine, a life sized T-Rex mechanical dinosaur, a Nerf War complete with obstacles and an unnamed surprise set to happen in Hubbards Harbour.

Andrew Button with the Awesome Foundation says there will be a few surprises this evening.

Another Successful Year For The Coal Shed Music Festival

The 11th annual Coal Shed Music Festival gives the spotlight to dozens of local artists in the month of August.

Another successful three-weekend festival wrapped up on Sunday on the Yarmouth Waterfront.

Over 100 artists took part.

Organizer Phil Demille says it was a great year once again.

Brazil Rock 33/34 Lobster Association Membership Growing

A lobster fishermen's organization has grown to over 100 members after just two weeks.

The Brazil Rock 33/34 Lobster Fishermen's Association, formed to give a united voice to fishermen, have already had meetings with officials of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

One of the directors of Brazil Rock, Shawn Muise, a lobster fisherman from Argyle, Yarmouth County, says the issues range from incidental by-catch monitoring, Marine Protected Areas, protecting the Atlantic Right Whale, an offshore wind mill proposal and more.

Hockey Gear Exchange Helps Get Kids In The Game

Local hockey players are finding it a little easier to make their way on to the ice.

The United Way of Lunenburg County just wrapped up its annual Hockey Gear Exchange at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre.

Coordinator at the United Way, Michael Graves says they managed to help a lot of people.

"It went really well. We outfitted quite a number of young players, kids just starting off as well as older kids just picking up a piece here and a piece there. Something they needed. So we are just absolutely thrilled."

NSCC Lunenburg Campus Getting A New Back To School Look

Summer is winding down and schools are ramping back up.

While summer does quiet down, NSCC Lunenburg Campus Principal Craig Collins says there has been a lot of activity this year.

"The summer months are precious time for us. That's when we do a lot of our upkeep of our facility, of our buildings, of our classrooms. We do some renovations."

He says people travelling past the campus will also have noticed the new curtain wall project going up around the outside of the college.

The aim is to increase the energy efficiency of the building.

Local Legion Official Pleased With New Veterans Affairs Appointment

The Royal Canadian Legion Commander, who represents 14 Legion branches from Yarmouth to Chester says he's pleased with the appointment of a new Minister of Veterans Affairs that was announced in this week's cabinet shuffle by Prime Minister Trudeau.

Seamus O'Regan, a former TV host, takes over the portfolio from Kent Hehr.

Don McCumber, District E Commander, says it's good that O'Reagan is from Eastern Canada.

(Updated 3pm) Four In Hospital After Two Vehicle Crash In Barrington

Four people were sent to hospital after a two-vehicle crash in Barrington this morning.

It happened near Exit 29 on Highway 103.

RCMP Media Relations Officer Corporal Jennifer Clarke says a small car and an SUV collided, each vehicle had two occupants.

Cpl. Clarke says RCMP do not know the extent of injuries, and have not released the gender or age of those hospitalized.

Traffic is flowing on the 103 but the road is closed between Exit 29 and the Old Post Road.

RCMP say they'll notify the public when the road re-opens.

Canada got a glimpse of what it's like to live, work and play in Lunenburg County.

Tina Hennigar with NOW Lunenburg County recently returned from her 36-day cross-country tour trying to recruit people to this area.

The population growth coordinator traveled more than 12,000 kilometres to visit several provinces and talking with thousands of people.

Singh Speaks To NDP Faithful in Lunenburg

A provincial politician from Ontario running to be the next NDP leader says he has no plans to run for a federal seat until 2019.

Jagmeet Singh spoke to roughly two dozen people Monday night at the Lunenburg library.

Singh says should he win the leadership vote, he would travel across the country and speak with Canadians.

It would be similar to Jack Layton's situation when he won the leadership in 2003.

"Jack Layton was a city councillor and when he won the leadership he was a city councillor and did not have a seat. There is a precedence for it."

Two-Vehicle Collision In Barrington

Emergency responders are on the scene of a two-vehicle collision in Barrington on Highway 103 near exit 29.

Barrington RCMP report there are injuries but couldn't confirm how many.

Exit 29 is closed and motorists are advised to use Highway 3 through Villagedale and Port Latour.

The Barrington-Port Latour Fire Department and EHS are also on scene.
